Welcome to The Soloist, a newsletter for players, creators, and curious explorers of solo and GM-less tabletop RPGs.
Shadow dark has built a fantastic community quickly. Impressive to see solo rules developed for them.
I enjoyed the group version of Shadowdark, better than the Old School Essentials that our current GM prefers.
Appreciated the book recommendation, but the Barbarian Prince / Castle Grief mashup…wow!
I'm ashamed to admit I've had both Barbarian Prince and D&D for decades and NEVER thought of combining the two! 🤦
Give both a shot!
NoteQuest is fantastic! Castle Grief’s substack is gold.
I was honestly a little disappointed in ShadowDark’s solo rules. The tables are great but the book really had no meat. Hopefully the additional stuff adds to this book.
My sense is more to come. The price is right (free), but I agree it could use more - specifically a clear procedure or session loop for solo play.
I need to check out NoteQuest. I've heard good things.
I really enjoyed NQ, play is great. I wrote up a little on my blog:

I just found Kelsey’s YouTube the other day! Definitely need to check her stuff out.
She's great.
