I remember watching Star Wars and playing Traveller in 77. When I took the books with me on summer vacation I created many sectors and several characters. Playing on my own, a Merchant Freighter plied the space lanes tradind cargo, getting repairs, and always reaching for that big score. Not so long ago I had the good fortune to chat with Mr Miller for a few minutes in conjunction with an order of CDs of Classic Traveller eBooks I had received. A really nice guy.
Great interview. I believe I have the Megatraveller books from a bundle but I was unaware of its origins as a solo TRPG. Now, very interested in learning more and playing for myself. Also going to deepdve these games.
I must have played Traveller when it first came out, when I was but a wee lad. It had a big impact on me (and taught me about hexadecimals and non-base 10 numbering systems. I remember trying to explain that to my mom. She didn't get it). Thanks for telling me of Traveller's Day and about the creator of the game.
Very cool that you got to interview Marc Miller! Any discussion of the lack of ability to continue to build skills after "mustering out" (at least in the original rules)? You can either play as a grizzled-but-skilled journeyman or a robust-but-unskilled tyro...
